Brief Bio

James is currently a PhD student in the Maginnis Lab at UMaine studying the mechanisms of JC polyomavirus-mediated signaling in the host utilizing primary human astrocyte and kidney cell models of infection, confocal microscopy, bioinformatics, and various biochemical assays. James started their career in research his second semester of university and was inspired to continue his journey and become a professor after participating in a NSF-REU in synthetic biology. James has worked with a variety of model organisms including C. elegans, Z. mays, zebrafish, and human cell culture, and received the national Goldwater Scholarship in 2023 and graduated with an American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology accredited degree in Biochemistry. They now want to continue their career in molecular virology to understand how viruses utilize host factors for infection, critical mechanisms of infection that can be targeted for antiviral treatments, and the greater impact viruses have on human health.
