Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Clarissa Henry to Director of the GSBSE and welcome Dr. Michael Mason to the GSBSE Leadership Team as Associate Director.

Dr. Henry has served as Program Director since 2018, during which time she has overseen multiple initiatives across all aspects of the program including increasing both applications and admitted students, implementing targeted retention efforts with regular student check-ins, co-administering the GSBSE NIH T32 with Dr. Lucy Liaw of MMCRI, and guiding the GSBSE community through the COVID-19 pandemic.

She has also graduated five PhD students through the GSBSE and is currently mentoring or co-mentoring three. Dr. Henry is a Professor in the School of Biology and Ecology in the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture.

Dr. Mason is joining the GSBSE from his position as a Professor in the Chemical and Biomedical Engineering Department within the College of Engineering. Dr. Mason brings to the Team a deep and substantial teaching record in Biomedical Engineering, which he hopes to leverage to revitalize the core GSBSE curriculum to better embody the transdisciplinary goals of the department.

Additionally, Dr. Mason’s extensive scholarship and industry work will continue to expand the GSBSE network.

His efforts have strengthened the benefits derived by the GSBSE community through the programs and services provided through the University of Maine Graduate School.”
