Regan, et al. finds folded paper creates portable lab for field laboratory tests
Daniel Regan, 2nd year Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. student in the Howell Lab at the University of Maine, was first author in the recently published article, “Combining the geometry of folded paper with liquid-infused polymer surfaces to concentrate and localize bacterial solutions” in the journal Biointerphases. Under the mentorship of Dr. Caitlin Howell, Regan, et al. reports a technique using low-cost paper coasted with a thin silicone polymer layer infused with a nontoxic silicone liquid. The liquid-coated paper could then be folded into precise geometries, creating vastly improved in-the-field devices for concentrating and testing biological samples.
