GSBSE NIH T32 Institutional Research Training Grant 2025-2026 Awardees

The Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering (GSBSE) T32 Steering Committee has chosen eight current GSBSE Ph.D. students as the sixth cohort of the UMaine GSBSE NIH T32 Institutional Research Training Grant.

The awardees are:

  • James Feduccia, mentor Dr. Melissa Maginnis of the University of Maine
  • Remi Geohegan, mentors Dr. Suzanne Angeli and Dr. Josh Kelley the University of Maine
  • Marisa Johnson, mentor Dr. Samantha Barrick of the University of Maine
  • Anna Kelly, mentor Dr. LIng Cao of the University of New England
  • Samuel Reynolds, mentor Dr. Ian Meng of the University of New England
  • William Sampson, mentor Dr. Eva Rose Balog of the University of New England
  • Savannah Wakita, mentor Dr. Scott Wood of the University of New England
  • Emma Yvanovich, mentor Dr. Sergey Ryzhov of the MaineHealth Institute for Research

Eligible students submitted proposals, which were reviewed for overall impact, significance, innovation, approach, and transdisciplinary nature. The awardees received fellowships, which include a stipend, tuition and university fees, and health insurance coverage.

The 2019-2024 T32 Transdisciplinary Predoctoral Training Program in Biomedical Science and Engineering, UMaine’s first T32, was very successful. It supported 17 trainees for their first and second years, with 5 subsequently receiving F31 grants.

This T32 proposes to provide support for 8 predoctoral students in their second and third years of study, all of whom will receive enhanced training strategies.

GSBSE is a statewide biomedical science and engineering PhD program that encompasses not only UMaine, but also the Jackson Laboratory, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, MaineHealth Institute for Research, and the University of New England. The UMaine GSBSE is uniquely positioned to train doctoral students interested in life science and medical-related careers. The doctoral program utilizes its partnerships with renowned research institutions that span the state of Maine in transdisciplinary methods of collaboration and team science.
